Smita Patil (Marathi:?????? ?????) (October 17, 1955 – 13 December 1986) was a leading Indian actress from the 1970s to the 1980s in both Hindi and Marathi cinema.
Along with actresses like Shabana Azmi, she was one of the potent quartet representing India's parallel cinema. In a succession of landmark films like Manthan (1977), Bhumika (1977), Aakrosh (1980) and Chakra (1981).
Patil was also an active feminist (in a distinctly Indian context) and a member of the Women's Centre in Bombay. She was deeply committed to the advancement of women's issues, and gave her endorsement to films which sought to explore the role of women in traditional Indian society, their sexuality, and the changes facing the middle-class woman in an urban milieu.[1]

Career
Smita Patil belongs to a generation of great actresses, including Suhasini Mulay and the aforementioned Shabana Azmi and, like them, is strongly associated with the radically political cinema of the 1970s. Her work includes films with parallel cinema directors like Shyam Benegal, Govind Nihalani and Mrinal Sen as well as forays into the more commercial Bollywood cinema of Bombay. Patil was working as a TV news reader and was also an accomplished photographer when Shyam Benegal discovered her.[2]
She was an alumna of the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune. In 1977, she won the National Award for 'Best Actress' for her performance in the Hindi film Bhumika. In her films, Patil's character often represents an intelligent femininity that stands in relief against the conventional background of male-dominated cinema (films like Bhumika, Umbartha, and Bazaar). Smita Patil was also a women's rights activist and became famous for her roles in films that portrayed women as capable and empowered.
As time went on, Patil moved away from her strictly "art house" reputation and, to the consternation of cinemaphiles, began to take parts in mainstream Bollywood extravaganzas.
"I remained committed to small cinema for about five years," Smita herself recalled. "I refused all commercial offers. Around 1977-78, the small cinema movement started picking up and they needed names. I was unceremoniously dropped from a couple of projects. This was a very subtle thing but it affected me a lot. I told myself that here I am and I have not bothered to make money. I have turned down big, commercial offers because of my commitment to small cinema and what have I got in return? If they want names I'll make a name for myself. So I started and took whatever came my way."
Initially her embarrassment showed as she mouthed corny dialogue, donned glitzy costumes and struck the archetypical Bollywood dance poses -- but soon her hard-core professionalism won out. In time she was accepted by commercial filmmakers and from Raj Khosla and Ramesh Sippy to B.R. Chopra, they all agreed that she was "excellent". Her fans, too, grew with her newfound stardom. Patil's glamorous roles in her more commercial films -- such as Shakti and Namak Halaal -- revealed the permeable boundaries between "serious" cinema and "Bollywood" masala in the Hindi film industry.
Her association with artistic cinema remained strong, however. Her arguably greatest (and unfortunately final) role came when Smita re-teamed with Ketan Mehta to play the feisty and fiery Sonbai in Mirch Masala (1987). Smita won raves for playing a spirited spice-factory worker who stands up against a lecherous petty official.

Smita was the daughter of a government minister and a social-worker mother. Born in Pune, Maharashtra, she studied at a Marathi-language school. Her first tryst with the camera was as a television newscaster. Her dusky beauty and large eyes drew attention. Always a bit of a rebel, she would grin when people complimented her on looking lovely in the saris she sported for the telecasts because minutes before going on air, she would have hurriedly wrapped the sari over her jeans.
When Patil became romantically involved with the actor Raj Babbar, a much-married man who eventually left his present wife to marry Patil, she drew severe criticism from her fans and the media, clouding her personal life and throwing her into the eye of a media storm. Overnight, Patil was labeled a "home-breaker" and became the target of barbed criticism. "It was a nightmare for both Smita and Raj and looking back it was ultimately her dignified silence and restraint that becalmed those troubled times. Ushering in hope for a promising, new future -- but that was not to be." [3]
Death
Smita died as a result of childbirth complications on December 13, 1986.
Nearly two decades later, one of India's greatest film directors, Mrinal Sen alleged that she died because of gross negligence.'"[4]
"She passed away even before she could cement her relationship with her just born son, Prateek," a 2002 remembrance noted. "Her son, now a strapping teenager, is not the only 'prateek' (symbol) of her memories. Smita has left behind a rich haul of films that showcase her enormous ability to offer us a glimpse into her soul each time she performed a role."[5]

Madhuri Dixit (Marathi: माधुरी दीक्षित) (born as Madhuri Shankar Dixit on May 15, 1967) is an award winning Indian Bollywood actress and one of the biggest stars of the Indian film industry. Throughout the late 1980s and 1990s, she dominated Hindi cinema as a leading actress, appearing in many hit films. She is considered to be an icon of the Bollywood film industry
Film career
Maduri Dixit made her acting debut in Abodh (1986). After a few minor and supporting roles the film which shot her to fame was the hit film Tezaab (1988). She then went on to star in the hit films such as Ram Lakhan (1989), Parinda (1989), Tridev (1989), Kishen Kanhaiya (1990), Dil (1990), Saajan (1991), Beta (1992), Khalnayak (1993), the Bollywood blockbuster Hum Aapke Hain Kaun! (1994) and Raja (1995).
After a year of little success, she appeared as Pooja in the blockbuster Dil To Pagal Hai (1997), for which she won her fourth Filmfare Best Actress Award.[2] In that same year, Dixit starred in Prakash Jha's critically acclaimed Mrityudand. The film straddled the boundary between an art and a commercial film. It won the Best Feature Film at the Cinéma Tout Ecran in Geneva, the Bangkok Film Festival and the Sansui Awards (Critics' Choice). Her performance in the film also landed her Best Actress awards at the Star Screen Awards and Sansui Awards.
Her dance sequences accompanying many famous Bollywood songs such as Ek Do Teen (from Tezaab), Bada Dukh Diya (from Ram Lakhan), Dhak Dhak (from Beta), Chane Ke Kheth Mein (from Anjaam), Choli Ke Peechche (from Khalnayak), Akhiyan Milau (from Raja), Piya Ghar Aya (from Yaarana), Key Sera (from Pukar), Mar dala (from Devdas), and many others have received abundant critical acclaim.
In 2002, she starred in Devdas, with actor Shahrukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai. Her performance was applauded and earned her a Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award. The film attracted worldwide attention and was featured at the Cannes Film Festival.[3].
The following year a film named after her, Main Madhuri Dixit Banna Chahti Hoon!, was released[4] in which a woman (played by Antara Mali) aspires to become the new Madhuri Dixit by trying her luck in the Bollywood industry.
On February 25, 2006 she performed on stage for the first time in six years at the Filmfare Awards to music from her last movie Devdas.[5] Her performance was choreographed by Saroj Khan.
Madhuri Dixit has been the muse for the famous Indian painter M.F. Hussain who considers her the epitome of the Indian woman. She also appeared in his film, Gaja Gamini (2000). The film was intended as a tribute to Dixit.[6]
On December 7, 2006, Dixit returned to Mumbai along with her husband and sons to start filming for Aaja Nachle (2007).[7] The film released in November 2007 and despite the critics panning it, Dixit's performance was well received, with the New York Times commenting about her that "she's still got it".[8][9]
On Women's International Day in 2007, Dixit topped the list of the Best Bollywood Actresses Ever.[10]
Personal life
Madhuri Dixit is a native of Mumbai, India. She was born Madhuri Shankar Dixit to Shankar and Snehlata Dixit, of a Marathi Chitpavan Brahmin family. Dixit attended Parle College and wanted to be a micro-biologist.[11] She is trained as a Kathak dancer, in the Indian classical tradition.
She married an Indian-American, Dr. Sriram Madhav Nene, in 1999. A UCLA-trained cardiovascular surgeon who practices in Denver, Nene is also from a Marathi Konkanastha Brahmin family. She has two sons, Arin (born in March 2003 in Colorado) and Ryan (born on March 8, 2005 in Colorado).
She has two elder sisters, Rupa and Bharati, and an elder brother, Ajit. Madhuri now lives with Dr. Nene and her two children in Denver, Colorado, USA.

Lata Mangeshkar
Dinanath Mangeshkar, her father, owned a theatrical company and was a reputed classical singer, a disciple of the Gwalior school. He gave her singing lessons from around the age of five. She also studied with Aman Ali Khan Sahib and later Amanat Khan. Her God-given musical gifts meant that she could master the vocal exercises effortlessly on first pass and from early on she was recognized as being highly gifted musically.
However when her father died in 1942, the onus of being the breadwinner of the family fell on Lata. Between 1942 and 1948 she acted in as many as 8 films in Hindi and Marathi to take care of the family's economic problems. She also made her debut as a playback singer in the Marathi film Kiti Hasaal (1942) but the song was edited out!
The first Hindi film in which she gave playback was Aap ke Sewa Main (1947) but her singing went unnoticed. When Lata entered the Film Industry, heavier Punjabi voices like Noor Jehan, Shamshad Begum and Zohrabai Ambalewali ruled the Industry. Ironically Lata was even rejected for Shaheed (1948) by producer S. Mukherjee who complained that her voice was too thin! However Ghulam Haider unable to use her in Shaheed gave Lata her breakthrough song with Dil Mera Toda from Majboor (1948).
1949 saw the release of four films. Barsaat, Andaaz (1949) , Dulari and Mahal. The songs of all four films were runaway hits particularly Aaega Aanewaalaa from the last mentioned. By 1950 the Lata wave had changed the Industry. Her high-pitched singing rendered obsolete the heavy basy nasal voices of the day. Only Geeta Dutt and to a certain extent Shamshad Begum survived the Lata onslaught. Asha Bhosle too came up in the late 1950s and the two sisters were the queens of Indian playback singing right through to the 90s.
Lata's initial style of singing was reminiscent of Noor Jehan but she soon got over that to evolve her own distinguished style. With her search for perfection she corrected her Urdu by hiring a tutor!
Her phenomenal success made Lata the most powerful woman in the Film Industry. She waged battle with Mohd. Rafi in the 1960s and stopped singing with him over the issue of royalty to playback artistes. She refused to sing for S.D. Burman from 1957 - 62 and such was her clout that she had her way and they came back to her.
Though Lata sang under the baton of all the top composers barring O.P. Nayyar and with all the top playback artistes of the day, special mention must be made of her work for C. Ramchandra who made her sound her sweetest and Madan Mohan who challenged her voice like no other music director. The 1960s and 70s saw Lata go from strength to strength even as there were accusations of her monopolizing the field.
From the 80s Lata cut down on her workload to concentrate on her shows abroad. Lata Mangeshkar sings infrequently now but even today the songs of some of the biggest hits of today Dil To Paagal Hai (1997), Maachis (1997), Hum Aapke Hain Kaun (1994) and Dil Se (1998) are sung by her. From Nargis to Kajol she's sung for them all. Lata Mangeshkar is in fact that rare artist who has realized her search for excellence.
A Phalke Award winner for her contribution to Indian Cinema, the latest jewel in Lata's crown is having India's highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna conferred on her.

Shahrukh Khan (Hindi: शाहरुख़ ख़ान, Hindko/Urdu: شاہ رخ خان, Pushtu: شاه روخ خان), born 2 November 1965, is a highly acclaimed Bollywood actor, producer, and recent host of the game show, Kaun Banega Crorepati. Khan started out his career appearing in several television serials in the late 1980s. He made his film debut with the hit Deewana (1992), and has been part of numerous commercial successes, delivering a variety of critically acclaimed performances as well. During his career years, he has won six Filmfare Best Actor Awards, and has had significant box office success, with films like Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (1995) and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), being some of Bollywood's biggest hits, while films like Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001), Veer Zaara (2004) and Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna (2006) are the biggest Bollywood hits in the overseas market. Since 2000, Khan branched out into film production and television presenting as well.
Biography
Khan was born to parents of Pathan ethnicity.[1][2] Khan's family was Muslim, and he was raised by Hindus for most of his life.[3] His father Taj Mohammed Khan was a freedom activist. His mother Lateef Fatima was the adopted daughter of Major General Shah Nawaz Khan of the Janjua Rajput clan, who served as a General in the Indian National Army of Subash Chandra Bose.[4]
Khan's father came to Gurgaon from Kissa Kahani Bazaar in Peshawar before the Partition of India,[5] while his mother's family came from Rawalpindi, also in present-day Pakistan.[6] Khan has an elder sister named Shehnaz.[7] Khan attended St. Columba's School where he was accomplished in sports, drama and academics. He won the Sword of Honour, an annual award bequeathed to the student who embodies most the spirit of the school. He later attended the Hansraj College (1985-1988) to earn an Honors degree in Economics. After this, he studied for a Masters Degree in Mass Communications at Jamia Millia Islamia University.[8]
After the death of his parents, Khan moved from Gurgaon to Mumbai in 1991.[9] In 1991, he married Gauri Khan in a Hindu wedding ceremony.[10] They have two children, son Aryan (b. 1997) and daughter Suhana (b. 2000).
Nasreen Munni Kabir produced a two-part documentary on Khan, titled The Inner and Outer World of Shah Rukh Khan (2005). Featuring his 2004 Temptations concert tour, the film contrasted Khan's inner world of family and daily life with the outer world of his work. Another book Still Reading Khan was released in 2006 which details his family and his life. In 2007 another book by Anupama Chopra King of Bollywood "Shahrukh Khan" and the seductive world of Indian cinema was released. This book described the world of Bollywood through Khan's life.
Khan's life-size wax statue is available in Madame Tussauds wax museum, London, installed in April 2007.[11] Khan has been chosen for the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Order of the Arts and Literature) award of the French government for his “exceptional career”.[12]
Career
As Actor
Khan studied acting under celebrated Theatre Director Barry John, at Delhi's Theatre Action Group (TAG). In 2007 John commented on his former pupil,

Khan started his acting career in 1988 appearing in the television series Fauji playing the role of Commando Abhimanyu Rai.[14] He went on to appear in several other television serials most notably appearing in the 1989 serial Circus,[15] which depicted the life of circus performers and was directed by Aziz Mirza. That same year he also had a minor role in the English language made-for-television film In Which Annie Gives it Those Ones, which was written by Arundhati Roy and based on life at Delhi University.
After the death of his parents Khan moved from Gurgaon to Mumbai in 1991.[16] He made his Bollywood film debut in Deewana (1992) which was a box office hit and launched his career in Bollywood.[17] His debut performance won him a Filmfare Best Male Debut Award. His second release Maya Memsaab was known for its controversial issues as Khan appeared in what was an "explicit for Bollywood" sex scene for the film.[18]
In 1993 he won acclaim for his performances as a murderer and obsessive lover respectively in the box office hits Baazigar and Darr. He won his first Filmfare Best Actor Award for his performance in Baazigar. He was also appreciated for his role as a young musician in Kundan Shah's Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa which earned him the Filmfare Best Actor Award (critics) that same year. In 1994 Khan once again played an obsessive lover/psycho role in Anjaam. Even though the movie was not a box office success Khan's performance in a negative role earned him the Filmfare Best Villain Award.
In 1995 he starred in Aditya Chopra's directorial debut Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge which was a critical and commercial success[19] and has entered its twelfth year in Mumbai theaters, grossing over 12 billion rupees in all, making it as one of the biggest film blockbusters.[20]
1996 was a disappointing year for Khan as all his films released that year flopped.[21] 1997 meant his diminutive comeback, as his first release, Yash Chopra's Dil to Pagal Hai went on to be the year's second highest grossing film.[22] That same year he also had success with Subhash Ghai's Pardes which was one of the biggest hits of the year and Aziz Mirza's moderately successful film Yes Boss.
Khan was welcomed with similar success in 1998 starring in Karan Johar's directional debut Kuch Kuch Hota Hai which was the biggest hit of the year and won him his fourth Best Actor award at the Filmfare. He also won critical praise for his performance in Mani Ratnam's Dil Se which did not do well at the box office in India, but earned good collections overseas.[23]
1999 was another non-notable year for Khan with the average grosser Baadshah as his only film release that year.[24] The year 2000 saw good success, with Aditya Chopra's second directional film Mohabbatein doing well at the box office, and Mansoor Khan's hit Josh. He gained critical acclaim for his performance in the former, which won him his second award for Best Actor (critics) at the Filmfare. In that same year, Khan set up his own production house Dreamz Unlimited with Juhi Chawla. Both Khan and Chawla starred in the first film from their production house Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani. He also played a supporting role in Kamal Hassan's controversial film Hey Ram for which he received much acclaim although the film was a failure at the box office.[25]
In 2001, Khan collaborated with Karan Johar for the second time with the multi-starrer family drama film Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, which was one of the biggest hits of the year. He also received favorable reviews for his performance as Emperor Asoka in the historical epic Asoka.
In 2002, Khan played the title role in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's award-winning period romance Devdas, which was the third Hindi adaptation of Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay's famous novel of the same name.
In 2003, Khan starred in the romantic drama Chalte Chalte which was a semi-hit.[26] He then made his third film with Karan Johar as the writer and Nikhil Advani as a director of the romantic drama Kal Ho Naa Ho. The movie was one of the year's biggest hits in India and in the overseas market as well. Khan's performance in this film as a guy who has heart disease was also well received.[27]
2004 proved to be a good year for Khan commercially and critically as well. He starred in Main Hoon Na which was the directorial debut of choreographer Farah Khan. The movie did well at the box office, whilst Yash Chopra's Veer-Zaara was the biggest hit of that year. Khan's performance in the latter was much appreciated and he won various awards at several award ceremonies. Khan also won critical praise for his performance in Ashutosh Gowariker's Swades, which won him the Filmfare Best Actor Award for the sixth time although the film was a box office failure.[28]
His only major film release in 2005 was the fantasy film Paheli which was not as successful at the box office, but won him acclaim.[29]
In 2006 he once again collaborated with Karan Johar for the melodrama film Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna which did well in India and became the biggest hit in the overseas market.[30] That same year he played the title role in Don, a remake of the 1978 hit film Don which was also successful.[31]
His first release in 2007 was the sports film Chak De India which released on August 10, 2007. Khan received good reviews for his performance as the coach of a girl's hockey team in the film. Despite a low start at the box office, the film has been declared blockbuster, simultaneously becoming one of the year's biggest hits.[32] His latest film Om Shanti Om which was on released on November 9, 2007. Om Shanti Om has taken a terrific start worldwide.
As a Producer
Khan has also produced some of the films he has starred in but has had mixed success as both the producer and the star of his films. He set up a production company called Dreamz Unlimited with Juhi Chawla and director Aziz Mirza in 1999. The first two of the films he produced and starred in: Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani (2000) and Asoka (2001) were box office failures.[33] His third film, as a producer and star, Chalte Chalte (2003), was the first box office hit from his production house.[34] In 2004 he set up another production company called Red Chillies Entertainment and produced and starred in Main Hoon Na which was another hit at the box office.[35] In 2005 he produced and starred in the fantasy film Paheli, which was a box office failure. It was India's selection for the Academy Awards (foreign films category) but did not win. That same year he also co-produced the supernatural horror film Kaal with Karan Johar and performed an item number for the film with Malaika Arora Khan. Kaal was moderately successful at the box office.[36]

As Television Host
Khan was chosen as the host of the third series of the popular game show Kaun Banega Crorepati, the Indian version of Who wants to be a millionaire?,[37] in 2007 taking over from the original host Amitabh Bachchan who had hosted the show from 2000 to 2005. On Monday, January 22, 2007, "KBC" aired with Khan as the new host. The season ended on April 19 2007.[38]
